California Summer Camp 2022 at Redwood National

As part of our Auctorium project, Erguvan members Enes, Esat, and Dilara visited artist Dave Yoas at his home and studio in Northern California to film an episode.
Dave is a largely self-taught artist known for his colorful assemblages made from cut and repurposed tin. Inspired by everything from vintage imagery to phrases and social issues, he collects tin from different sources, cuts and manipulates the material, and brings the pieces together into detailed narrative works. Humor and unexpected details often sit alongside social commentary in his art.
From the moment we arrived, Dave welcomed us into his home, where artwork—his own and that of other artists—filled nearly every room. He then took us downstairs to his garage studio, surrounded by his collection of tin materials, and introduced us to a new interactive piece titled Last Call.
Once the cameras and lighting were set up, our conversation covered his creative process, travels around the world, becoming an artist without formal art training, and his decision to devote himself fully to his practice after retirement. We also filmed B-roll throughout his studio to capture the materials, details, and environment behind his work.
What was planned as an interview turned into nearly four hours together. We took a break over homemade cookies and fruit prepared by his wife and ended the visit back in the living room over coffee, continuing our conversation off camera. Even then, Dave made a point of telling us about other artists he admires and encouraging us to visit their upcoming exhibitions.
