For another Auctorium shoot, Erguvan’s Houston, Texas team: Husna, Temi, Abraham, and Diana, visited artist Eric Coan at his studio at Sabine Street Studios.
Eric Coan is a Houston-based contemporary painter whose work explores the relationship between human experience, memory, nature, and identity. His semi-abstract landscapes are built through layers of paint and mixed media, using texture, light, geometry, and symbolism to create spaces that feel as psychological as they are physical. Rather than depicting specific locations, his paintings often use landscapes as a way to explore transition, distance, change, and reflection.
The team spent time talking with Eric while setting up the cameras, which made for a comfortable start to the shoot. Temi led the interview, while Husna, Abraham, and Diana worked on the production. After the conversation, the team captured B-roll throughout the studio building and outside the space.
Eric’s work had already stood out in photographs, but seeing it in person was a different experience. The scale of the paintings and the amount of texture and detail in their surfaces became much more apparent inside the studio. His process often involves building up, covering, and reworking layers of material, so viewing the pieces up close offered a better sense of how much goes into each surface.
At the end of the shoot, Eric walked the team back to their cars before they headed out together to watch a film, wrapping up another Auctorium filming day for our Houston team.
