The Auctorium team is on fire! Erguvan members Rengin, Nalan, and Polat visited ceramic artist Tony Natsoulas at his Sacramento home and studio.
Tony is known for his large-scale figurative ceramic sculptures, often combining portraiture, humor, storytelling, and references to popular culture. He studied ceramics at UC Davis, earning both his B.A. and M.F.A., and was a student of influential ceramic artist Robert Arneson. His work has been exhibited widely and is held in collections including the Crocker Art Museum, Oakland Museum of California, San Jose Museum of Art, and SFMOMA.
Tony welcomed our team into his home filled with art. His colorful works were scattered throughout the house alongside pieces he has collected from artist friends. The space felt like a personal museum. The visit continued into his garden, where large ceramic sculptures stand outside, and into his kiln and working spaces.
During the conversation, Tony spoke about his life as an artist and the importance of leaving meaningful work behind. He reflected on his family’s immigrant history and the opportunities made possible by the generations before him, which is something he feels a responsibility to honor through the life and work he has built.
Tony gifted our members a copy of his book and some of his ceramics to remember the visit by. We are grateful to Tony for opening his home, sharing his stories, and giving Auctorium such a generous look into the life surrounding his work.
