Erguvan members Dilara, Rengin, Nermin, and Nalan visited the de Young Museum to see works by Claude Monet in person during their time at San Francisco.
For Rengin, seeing the paintings from a distance and then up close made her understand that, what appears unified from afar is built from loose, irregular brushstrokes. She loved how Monet painted very similar landscapes, but just by changing the lighting conditions, focusing less on exact outlines, and using the experience of seeing a place in a particular moment as his driving force, he created entirely different artworks.
Nermin approached the exhibition from a different place. She shared that she knew very little about Monet beforehand, so reading about his life at the beginning of the visit helped her understand the works. As the group moved through the galleries, everyone found their own favorites. She was especially drawn to the pastel tones and also enjoyed seeing works by other artists connected to Monet.
For Nalan, who already considered Monet one of her favorite painters, she found herself thinking about Monet’s repeated studies of the same scenes at different times of day and about the patience behind that process. She noticed how long other visitors stood in front of some works, each person experiencing them differently. Monet’s ability to make ordinary landscapes feel idealized through light was something she left the exhibition with.
