For another Auctorium shoot, Ismail Talha from Germany spent time with Sarah Grace Dye at her home and studio.
Sarah Grace is a visual artist, curator, and educator with around 30 years of experience in the arts. She is originally from Yorkshire and is now based in Frankfurt, Germany. Her practice focuses on collecting objects, ephemera, memories, and stories, then working with them through drawing, artist’s books, paper making, collage, ink, watercolor, cyanotype, natural dyes, and other processes. She is also a founding member of the Artist’s Book Centre in Sheffield and has been involved in collaborative and curatorial projects including SIX project space.
A big part of her work is the idea that the process does not always need to be completely planned from the beginning. She likes leaving room for play, experimentation, and unexpected results. She also works a lot with everyday or discarded materials and is interested in finding new value in things that might otherwise be overlooked.
After the filming, we stayed for a meal and continued talking off camera. Sarah Grace also showed us around her home and garden. That part of the visit actually connected very naturally to her work, since nature, collecting, memory, and ordinary objects all show up frequently in her practice. She has even described her garden as one of the places that most inspires her work.
