So, what happened on Peace Day?
A little bit of everything.
On September 7, Erguvan Art & Academy joined the Peninsula Multifaith Coalition’s Peace Day gathering at Twin Pines Park in Belmont. People from different faiths, backgrounds, and organizations came together for a few hours of prayer, music, art, food, and conversation.
Throughout the day, we listened to chants, songs, poems, prayers, and reflections from different traditions. People were listening to each other, learn from each other, and be together.
Erguvan joined in through art. Ali Karatay created live calligraphy pieces with participants’ names, which became a really nice way to meet people and start conversations.
Erguvan members Alperen and Esra Nur shared a prayer. The prayer moved between different names for God and focused on gratitude, justice, compassion, peace, and our responsibility toward one another.
The prayer also asked that we have the courage to be uncomfortable with injustice, to reach out to people who are suffering, to welcome strangers, and to believe that we really can make a difference.
It ended with this sentence:
“And we believe: Art will save the world.”
Beyond the program itself, we also got to meet a lot of new people. We introduced Erguvan Art & Academy, invited people to visit our center, connected with other artists, and even started talking about a possible future field trip to the center.
There were a lot of different voices in the park that day, but the message was pretty simple:
“Give peace a chance!”
And maybe peace sometimes starts exactly like this: sharing food, listening to someone else’s prayer, making art together, and meeting people you did not know before.
