For this Auctorium shoot, Erguvan member Bedia from Italy and Ismail Talha from Germany visited Aljoscha at his home and studio in Italy.
Aljoscha is a Ukrainian-born contemporary artist based in Düsseldorf, Germany, and the artist behind the concepts of Bioism and Biofuturism. His work has been shown internationally in museums, galleries, churches, universities, and other public spaces, including the Ludwig Museum Koblenz, Osthaus Museum, and exhibitions across New York, Paris, Milan, Madrid, Kyiv, Vienna, and other cities. He received the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2020 and first prize for sculpture at the XXXV Premio Bancaja in Spain in 2008. His work is also represented in public collections including the Getty Center, Kupferstichkabinett Berlin, Ludwig Museum Koblenz, and the Vatican Collection.
Our team pointed that Aljoscha lives in a small, quiet area near a historic castle, and his studio is full of unusual materials, forms, and works in progress. His pieces have a very organic, almost biological look to them, so seeing them in the space where they are actually made added a lot to the visit.
A big part of Aljoscha’s work is what he calls Bioism and Biofuturism. He takes inspiration from biology and synthetic biology and creates forms that look like possible organisms or life forms that do not exist yet. His work also connects to bigger questions about bioethics, the future of life, suffering, and what a more ideal future might look like.
During the shoot, he was very open about how he thinks and works. He talked through his process, current projects, and the ideas behind the pieces in the studio. Bedia and Ismail Talha filmed a lot of B-roll, including close details of the works, materials, and different parts of the workspace. To give the team a better sense of what happens before the finished work is shown in an exhibition, Aljoscha took them around the areas where he works and explained how some of the pieces come together step by step.
