Two Days with Crystal Billing

For another Auctorium shoot, Husna, Abraham, and Diana from Houston, TX, spent two days filming painter Crystal Billing, first in her studio and then outdoors in a wooded area that connects closely to her relationship with nature and painting.

Crystal is an oil painter whose work centers on biblical, mythological, psychological, and nature-based themes. She combines realism with elements of abstraction and uses symbolism to explore ideas of beauty, hope, faith, memory, and contemplation. In her own artist statement, she describes wanting her paintings to create a sense of mystery and awe that encourages viewers to slow down, ask questions, and think more deeply about the world around them.

The conversations became quite personal. Crystal spoke about what painting means to her, at times becoming emotional as she described how deeply she loves the act of making art. For Husna, that connection had actually begun before they ever met. She first came across Crystal’s artwork while scrolling online and stopped because the work immediately caught her attention, even though she knew nothing about the artist or the influences behind the paintings at the time.

After filming, Crystal showed the team parts of her home, including artwork connected to her family. Spending two days together gave the team a chance to understand Crystal’s work with some of the experiences and emotions behind it.
