UC Davis CITRIS Inspire: Bridging Art and Technology in STEM Education

8 March, 2025

On March 8, 2025, Erguvan Art & Academy joined forces with UC Davis’ CITRIS Inspire Program and the Northwest AI Hub for an interactive workshop exploring the intersection of art and technology. This event was part of a broader six-week program supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), BE-STEM STARSE, and SJCOE FabLab, designed to provide hands-on STEM learning opportunities to high school students.

Why were we there?

Dilara and Hamid were invited to present a special session that asked a bold question: What if some of the greatest scientific breakthroughs were rooted in art? Their joint presentation—“The Intersection of Art, Science, and Technology”—unpacked how artistic thinking has historically contributed to innovations in anatomy, physics, digital design, and even artificial intelligence.

Topics covered included:

  • Leonardo da Vinci’s anatomical sketches and flying machine concepts
  • The chemistry of color and its link to modern digital screens
  • How AI-generated art challenges our definitions of creativity
  • The role of beauty, the golden ratio, and neuroscience in shaping product and UX design

The session emphasized the value of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) over traditional STEM to show how creative thinking and problem-solving enrich technological advancement.

After the presentation, participants engaged in a collaborative activity that combined optics and sculpture. Using clear acrylic and smartphone light, they created mini holographic displays, seeing firsthand how simple materials can create immersive visual effects.

Where it happened?

The event took place on the UC Davis campus, hosted by the CITRIS Banatao Institute’s Inspire initiative. With banners from Erguvan, Northwest AI Hub, and UC Davis standing side-by-side, this gathering embodied the value of cross-disciplinary collaboration

This event marked the latest chapter in an ongoing collaboration between Erguvan Art & Academy and the CITRIS Inspire program. Through each partnership, we continue to expand our impact at the intersection of youth education, innovation, and the arts. Events like these reflect a shared mission: using creativity to shape the future of science and technology.
